2008: The SCHURTER Group in a turbulent environment

Lucerne, 9 April 2009 - The SCHURTER Group, active in the electronics industry, experienced two very different business developments in the year 2008. During the first half of the year sales remained on the same level as in the previous year. In contrast, sales dropped heavily during the last months of 2008 due to decreasing global demand. Sales in 2008 reached a level of 200.3 Mio. CHF, which corresponds to a decrease of 5% compared to last year. Adjusted for exchange rate losses due to the very strong Swiss Franc, the decrease in sales is only marginal with 1.7%. Net profit decreased by 74% to a mere 1.9 Mio. CHF.

2008 got off to a promising start for the SCHURTER Group with her 19 worldwide subsidiaries achieving good sales figures, although indications of the market´s growing lack of confidence had already begun to be detected. Following the summer months a decline in sales was experienced in all markets with sales in America and Asia very much affected by the decline.

A significant part of the SCHURTER product portfolio has been affected by the decline in sales. The biggest division with Connectors, Circuit Breakers for Equipment and Fuses showed a sharp decline. However, with the Division Input Systems, which mainly supplies the European market, an increase in sales has been achieved.

With sales of 200.3 Mio. CHF the target of 200 Mio. CHF annual sales has been exceeded for the second time, whereas a decline of 5% compared with the previous year had to be accepted. The high export ratio and the strong exchange rate of the Swiss Franc to the Euro as well as to the US Dollar have had an important influence on the annual sales figures. However, after adjusting for these exchange rate losses, the decrease in sales by 1.7% was relatively low.

Net profit decreased to 1.9 Mio. CHF in 2008, a decrease of 74% compared with 2007. Cash flow declined by 36.6% to 10.88 Mio. CHF this can be mainly attributed to the fact that the cost structure could not be reduced to the same order as the sales decrease.

The first months of 2009 have shown a continuing fragile demand for SCHURTER products. For that reason reduced hours have been introduced for most of the employees of the SCHURTER companies in Switzerland (Lucerne, Mellingen and Mendrisio) as well as in subsidiaries abroad. In some cases, early retirements have been agreed upon. Reduced hours came into effect at the beginning of March and April 2009 respectively ranging from 30 to 50% reductions. Various indicators suggest that the current downturn may be drawing to a conclusion. However, it is difficult to estimate when business of the SCHURTER Group will reach the level of 2007 again.

As a family-owned enterprise with more than 1,500 employees worldwide, it is of great importance to the SCHURTER Group to retain the know-how of the employees and to continue offering innovative products to the customers.

SCHURTER, SWISS Fuse Manufacturer with 75 Years of Experience, now goes into Space
SCHURTER, continuously raising the bar for quality, has developed from a family business making fuses for domestic and commercial installations into a manufacturer of high-tech products used in space.

SCHURTER, founded in 1933 in Lucerne ist still a family enterprise, celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. The company, which started out as a manufacturer of fuses for use in domestic and commercial installations, continuously expanded its expertise in response to its customers' needs. Today, SCHURTER manufactures and distributes some 6000 different, high-quality passive components for the electrical and electronics industries, focusing mainly on ensuring safe power to equipment and easy operation.

The excellent quality of SCHURTER's products is the result of purposeful, market oriented development in close cooperation with its partners as well as the use of state-of-the-art manufacturing processes and facilities. What distinguishes us is our consistent and steadfast quality management practices. Applying the EFQM (European Foundation for Quality Management) model, obtaining ISO 9001 certification, focusing on processes, implementing the SIX SIGMA methods as well as remaining committed to Business Excellence 2.7MB (PDF) : all these factors combine to make us an ideal partner for top-quality products.

On June 16, 2008, after an extensive evaluation and qualification process (Success Story MGA-S 86.4KB (PDF) ) conducted in cooperation with representatives from the ESTEC (European Space Research and Technology Center) in the Netherlands, we were the first Swiss company to have our MGA-S fuse certified (ESA Certificate 1.7MB (PDF) ) by and included in the Qualified Parts List of the ESCC (European Space Component Coordination), an ESA (European Space Agency) sub organization, thus also becoming the only European supplier of fuses holding that qualification. SCHURTER and its qualified part are listed on the ESCC Website, next to all other components qualified for use in space.

MGA-S is an SMD (Surface Mounting Device) fuse manufactured using thin film technology and hermetically encapsulated in a ceramic housing to form an extremely rugged unit meeting the extraordinary demands of the aerospace industry, such as:
  • Consistent xx properties, even when operating in a high-vacuum environment
  • G forces of up to 1600
For further information, please refer to the product press release containing the fuse's principal features or the product data sheet. Each unit is subjected, before shipping, to a specified burn-in test (168h at 85°C and 96% of the nominal current) to reduce practically to zero the failure rate during operation. The fuses are used as short-circuit protectors for various on-board modules (payloads) in satellites. We will also make available a description of the qualification procedure (Fuse for Aerospace Industry 169.5KB (PDF) ) as white papers.

Please feel free to ask us for detailed product information or samples for qualification. As an alternative for demanding industrial applications, the MGA, while not burn-in tested, offers the same design features and hence similar characteristics.

For additional product information, please write to: your local Schurter hub in Europe contact@schurter.ch, North America info@schurterinc.com and Asia info@schurter.com.sg or send us your particulars, and we will contact you.

SCHURTER AG Quality Management
The SCHURTER name stands for products meeting the highest demands. SCHURTER achieves its outstanding overall quality through the consistent and steadfast application of the EFQM (European Foundation for Quality Management) model. SCHURTER's management system - certified in accordance with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 - links quality and environmental management, social responsibility and occupational safety.

We use the methods of SIX SIGMA for consistently bringing our processes into alignment with the needs of our customers. We record critical process values, identify improvement potential and systematically implement improvements. Process parameters such as ppm and cpk show us which processes conform to the demanding SIX SIGMA standard and where additional measures are necessary, while at the same time providing our partners and customers with evidence of our advanced process capability. SIX SIGMA is today and will be in the future the basis of excellent processes at SCHURTER.

SCHURTER has, from the development to the production stage, inserted specific inspection points to prevent errors or identify them in the process. New products and processes are investigated in reviews and using Failure Mode and Effects Analyses (FMEA). Initial sample inspections are performed to qualify product alterations. Using SPC (Statistical Process Control) and CAQ (Computer Aided Quality Control), we monitor and control manufacturing processes. Each year, we implement over 700 improvements, aiming for a SIX SIGMA level of 3.6 ppm (3.6 errors (parts) per million parts).

2007: Record sales - for the first time above CHF 200 mio.
Lucerne, 20 March 2008 - The Schurter Group, active in the electronics industry, increased sales by 13,0 % to CHF 210,7 mio. in 2007. At the same time SCHURTER achieved a good result. Cash flow increased to CHF 17,2 Mio. (+ 4,2 %) and profit amounted to CHF 7,4 mio. ( - 11,6 %). The result achieved can be attributed to a favourable economic environment and to a general increase in productivity.

Not least thanks to the acquisition of the ticinese Ticomel Group, which is mainly active in the domestic market, the share of consolidated sales generated abroad was reduced to 80%. The Ticomel group is an electronic manufacturer (EMS) with a production site in Romania. Sales with input systems increased by more than 7% to just under CHF 50 mio., component sales remained stable with CHF 130 mio. The SCHURTER group is optimistic for 2008. Despite high pricing pressure, permanent price erosion in the Asian markets and the emerging weakness of the US Dollar, we expect a moderate growth in sales. The Lucerne based family-owned enterprise employs 1'661 persons, whereof 518 in Switzerland in Lucerne, Mellingen and Mendrisio.

As a result, RUTRONIK will distribute the entire SCHURTER product range with immediate effect.

"As manufacturers of high-quality products, with production plants in Europe and Asia, we are convinced that our products will in this way consolidate and extend our market position."

Joerg Ciper, Marketing Director Electromechanical Components at RUTRONIK, also sees great opportunities for both companies in this cooperative venture: "SCHURTER is a well-known manufacturer of electromechanical components, which supplements our existing range perfectly. With the franchise agreement that has now been signed, RUTRONIK will, as the leading broadline distributor in Europe, sell all the articles from SCHURTER, and also offer the manufacturer access to industrial customers. A New Sales Turnover Record In 2006

Active in the electronics industry, the SCHURTER Group increased its sales turnover in 2006 by 13.5% to CHF 186.4 Mio. Simultaneously the Group also achieved a very good result. Cash Flow increased to CHF 16.4 Mio (+ 37.6%) and the profit amounted to CHF 8.3 Mio (+ 91.5%). The substantial increase in profit is primarily due to a positive economic environment, productivity increases and favourable rates of exchange.

In Europe the sales turnover increased by 13.5% to CHF 141.7 Mio. Sales in North America also increased by 13.5%, i.e., a sales turnover of CHF 27.9 Mio was achieved. In Asia the sales results remained constant at CHF 13.0 Mio (previous year CHF 13.1 Mio). The percentage of sales turnover outside Switzerland amounts to 87.5% at the present time. Encouragingly, the Swiss market also developed favourably where a sales turnover of CHF 23.3 Mio (+ 5.0%) was reached.

The SCHURTER Group is optimistic for 2007. Market activity has shown a slight slowdown, but it is at still quite a high level, however. Of particular consequence here is slackness in America and Asia, whereas in Europe business is still very buoyant.

Having a consolidated sales turnover of a good CHF 24 Mio, the company of Ticomel SA in Mendrisio, Switzerland was acquired at the beginning of the year together with its affiliated company in Romania. Integration of the company is going according to plan.

At the end of the year, the Lucerne family-owned enterprise had a work force of 1'212 employees from whom 442 were employed in Lucerne, Mellingen and Mendrisio.
